Hydrate
Ready to beat the heat this summer while growing your family? Pregnancy in the peak summer months may sound intimidating; however, it is possible to enjoy the weather and your pregnancy. Remaining hydrated will be a key part of this. Your body temperature will naturally be warmer in pregnancy, which can make the outdoors feel even warmer. Remaining hydrated and preventing yourself from losing too many fluids will be important. Some fun drink ideas include coconut water, electrolyte drinks, smoothies, and teas. Preventing dehydration at any point in pregnancy is important, but it will be even more important if you are out in the sun.
Keep Your Glow
Throughout your pregnancy, your skin will more than likely change as well. This means that your “pregnancy glow” may also cause your skin to be more sensitive. If you are outdoors in peak UV conditions, it will be important to use proper sunscreen and sun protection. Seeking shade and cool areas will be beneficial to keep you cool, but also protect your skin. Another common side effect of pregnancy is swelling, which can unfortunately be even more common in the summer months. If you notice your feet or ankles swelling, make your best effort to cool down, keep your feet elevated, and wear comfortable shoes if you must remain standing.
Exercise with Care
Exercise throughout pregnancy is important as well, but may seem harder in the summer months. Light indoor exercise or prioritizing exercise during the cooler hours will be best. This may look like going for a morning or evening walk, or yoga in your living room. Learning to listen to your body is a great way to enjoy your summer and remain healthy throughout your pregnancy. If you start to become lightheaded, nauseous, fatigued, or have extreme swelling, always do what you can to cool down, rest, and seek assistance from a healthcare professional. If something feels off to you, it is always best to contact a trusted healthcare professional, even if some say what you are experiencing is “normal” or not. It may
seem intimidating or challenging at first, but as you learn to listen to your body and modify daily routines, you will be on your way to having the best summer.
