The Nesting Spot Interview
Sit down for our interview with Angela, an IBCLC and owner of The Nesting Spot, to hear what she has to say on supporting breastfeeding mothers!
What is an IBCLC?
“An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Our certification is considered the “gold standard” of lactation care.”
How is seeing an IBCLC beneficial throughout pregnancy and postpartum?
“I usually recommend that women take a Prenatal Breastfeeding class between 34 and 37 weeks of gestation. Just having a base knowledge of lactation and breastfeeding is such a huge benefit going into your journey. Lactation is a specialty that most other health and birth professionals are not trained in. Many people will assume that the pediatrician or OBGYN will be able to assist them, and that is usually not the case. Finding and establishing care with an IBCLC while you are still pregnant will set you up for the best outcome once baby arrives.”
If you could give one piece of advice to a new mom struggling to breastfeed, what would it be?
“Just one?! Probably, learn how to hand express. Hand expression into a spoon or cup can be an effective way to feed a baby in the first few days after delivery if the baby is unable to latch onto the breast. Then, call me at The Nesting Spot. Ha!”
What is the biggest breastfeeding myth you commonly hear, and why is it a myth?
“That breastfeeding hurts. Although it is common, it is not normal. Proper latching and effective breastfeeding should not hurt. Pain is evidence that there is a problem that can usually be fixed with the help of an IBCLC.”
What are some of the biggest challenges a breastfeeding mother faces?
“I think the pressure from society and all of the mixed messages we get as mothers. It is so hard to be a young, new mom and try to make sense of all of the information, especially on social media. Pumping, feeding, harvesting colostrum, power pumping, what to eat & drink, supplements, go back to work/not go back to work, when to wean, etc. My best piece of advice: remember this is YOUR journey….YOU are writing this story. And it can look however YOU want it to look. Find someone to support you and honor what you want that journey to look like.”
