The 1000 Hours Outside movement challenges families to get outdoors. The goal is 4-6 hours per day outside. If that seems like a lot, it is.
Four to six hours is also a lot of time to be looking at a screen, but most families spend at least that much time on computers, smartphones, gaming systems, and TVs.
While 1000 hours is a lofty goal, simply increasing time spent outdoors, year-round, can be beneficial to everyone.
The founder of the 1000 Hours Outside movement, Ginny Yurich, will be speaking in Lansing and Traverse City later this year. Yurich’s website, 1000hoursoutside.com, offers plenty of blog posts about ways to get outside with kids. She has created an app that tracks time outside, along with many resources for tracking outdoor time.
How much time do you spend outside? Do you think time outdoors is more important than screen time?
