No Chaos
We have all seen the movies of women in labor screaming, people running everywhere, bright lights, surgical supplies, etc. Quite frankly this chaos can happen, however, creating a calm environment is more common and attainable. There does not have to be any chaos when you set yourself up with a clear birth plan and goals. Creating this calm birth environment starts with your birth plan. Having clear preferences and goals for your environment helps your birth
team know what you need most.
Supportive Partner
Having a supportive partner and doula is a great place to start. Your birth partner and/or doula can help hold space for you and your birth environment. Some things you may want to consider to create a calm environment would be dim
lights, being able to move, twinkle lights, positive affirmations throughout the room, a private shower or tub, essential oils, etc. These will all vary based on your birth location and your personal preferences.
What Do you Want?
When working to create your environment, think about what would relax you the most. What would be ideal for all five of your senses? Every woman will be different and have her own preferences. Your doula will be able to guide you through your options. You may also want to discuss with your provider what amenities are available at your birth location. Every hospital and birth center will be different. You more than likely will be the most comfortable in your home
however not every woman will want or have the ability to birth at home. So something you may also consider is spending more time in early labor at home.
If you are birthing in the hospital creating a calm environment may be harder, however, it is attainable by advocating for yourself and your preferences. Even in the event of a cesarean section, you can still make some requests to create a calmer environment.
Make a Birth Plan
Thinking about your preferences throughout your pregnancy is a great start. After you have decided on your preferences, writing them down in your birth plan will be important so your team can help you through labor. You may not always be able to speak to what you would like done, so having a clear plan will help keep your environment calm and relaxed.
