More often than not, when we think of doulas we think of them supporting mothers. While this is true, doulas also can be an incredible support for birth partners as well. Birth can be an incredible experience and a doula can help ensure this is true for both the mother and birth partner. A birth partner is a huge support for mothers so this means they may need support as well. Doulas can provide support emotionally, physically, and mentally as well.
Basic Needs
A few simple ways doulas can provide support to a birth partner is simply reminding them to eat and drink. Occasionally birth can be long and the proper nutrition and hydration can give a birth partner the energy they need. We often hear of mothers using positive affirmations at birth, well guess what? Doulas can provide these positive affirmations for Dad as well. Gentle reminders can help them stay focused and relieve any anxiety or stress they may be experiencing. Birth can be unpredictable and it is often reassuring for birth partners to know they have a doula to support them as well. Having a doula you are comfortable and familiar with is so important for both the mother and birth partner.
Having a supportive and involved birth partner can be incredibly important. While birth may come with ease to some, there can also be some anxiety and stress for others. Knowing you have a doula on your side and that has your back can lead to a positive experience for everyone involved.
Starting Off Strong
Research has shown that the most positive birth experiences for fathers were ones where they had continuous support from a doula or a midwife. In the McGrath and Kennell study, the women and their partners who had a doula overwhelmingly rated the support of their doula as positive—with 93% rating their experience with the doula as very positive, and 7% as positive. (Dekker, 2024) So before you hire your doula, chat with your partner and see how they can also feel the most supported by your doula.
