Navigating the Fourth Trimester

Navigating the Fourth Trimester

Throughout your pregnancy, you probably became very familiar with weeks, dates, and trimesters. But one we don’t hear as much about is the fourth trimester. The fourth trimester is considered to be the immediate postpartum period. Some say it is considered to be the first 12 weeks after childbirth. This can be a beautiful, yet challenging period in your life. You will experience many physical, mental, emotional, and social changes. You now have a new role with your newborn such as navigating feeding and sleep schedules. You will also be experiencing strong hormonal changes as well as healing physically and mentally from childbirth. There are many simple things you can do to prepare yourself physically and mentally for this period in your life.

Prepare

Preparing for your fourth trimester can be simpler than you think. Some simple yet effective tools start with preparing hearty and nutritious freezer meals. Freezing chicken noodle soup, beef stew, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, etc. can all be beneficial as they can easily be reheated in a pinch. Another great tip is preparing a diaper/breastfeeding/nursing station or cart. Preparing this can help with middle-of-the-night feeds and diaper changes. Some ideas include having a small stock of diapers, wipes, nipple shields, breast pumps, and parts, and a soft light. Another great idea is gathering your bathroom supplies so they are easily accessible when you need them. This can include a peri bottle, pads, disposable underwear, witch hazel pads, and a sitz bath.

Self-care

If you are already in this period there are still some things you can do to ease the navigation in this time. Some simple ideas can be journaling, reading a new book, breathing exercises, going on a walk, and taking time for yourself. Spending any time outside can also be beneficial for not just you but your baby as well as long as the weather permits. Taking care of yourself will not only benefit you but it will also benefit your baby. It can also help increase breastmilk supply as stress can be a factor in production as well. Remember, it is okay to ask for help whether that be from a postpartum doula, family, friends, providers, etc. The fourth trimester can be one of the most challenging yet beautiful times in your life.
