Cold & Flu Season with Baby

Depending on where you live, the cold and flu season may last for 6+ months. For many mothers, this is a daunting time, but with some simple tips and tricks, it can be less scary knowing you are prepared.

Prevention

Your first line of defense with your baby will be prevention. Some simple ways to prevent being sick are to avoid those who are sick and ask anyone around your baby to refrain from kissing your baby. What may seem like just a run-of-the-mill cold can be much more serious for a newborn, so ask those with even a mild sniffle to avoid visiting if possible. If you are breastfeeding, nursing your baby can be extremely beneficial as you will pass antibodies on to your baby to protect them. Even if you are sick, it is still very important to continue breastfeeding your baby.

Immune System Support

Some other key steps to preventing sickness can include getting outside when the weather permits and supporting your family’s immune system. Depending on your baby’s age, if they are eating solids, you can work on ensuring they are eating a healthy diet rich in vitamin C and limiting sugars. Many of us may also use honey during sick season as it can help sore throats and is found in many natural remedies. Remember, if your baby is under the age of one, they cannot ingest any honey. If there are older siblings in the home, it can be hard to prevent the spread of viruses; however, you can work to minimize them, such as reminding older children to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing, frequent hand washing, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces.

Preparation

In the case your baby does become sick, it will be important to first not panic. Being prepared ahead of time can help reduce added stress at this time. Depending on the severity of the illness, you may need to consult your pediatrician. They will be able to give you the best advice regarding over-the-counter medications and what is needed to treat your baby. Some simple supplies you can pick up to prepare yourself for cold and flu season may be extra tissues, saline spray, over-the-counter medications, snot suckers, etc. Prioritizing rest will be key at this time and will be important for everyone. This can be a trying time for everyone; remembering to give yourself and your family grace will be most important.
