Start Early
Whether you have decided to begin trying to conceive or think it may be in your future, you can never be too early in your preparation for pregnancy. Taking a prenatal vitamin is a simple way to get started. Not only should you begin a prenatal vitamin, but it is also good for your partner to begin a daily vitamin as well. Fertility is not only a woman’s concern but also their male counterpart’s. Ensuring you both are meeting daily nutritional requirements is a great way to optimize fertility for both parties. Another great way you can begin preparing your body is through exercise. This will look vastly different for everyone; some may engage in weight training, yoga, running, etc. Simply moving your body is a great way to optimize your health and well-being. Many women lead busy lives, and a simple walk around the block after work is a great way to add movement to your day. Exercise is not only good for our bodies but is also good for our minds. Mindset going into pregnancy will be important, as the beginning of pregnancy can be challenging for some, on top of the immense hormonal shift you will experience.
Get Educated
The next step to prepare for pregnancy is ensuring you are educated on your body, fertility, and pregnancy. It is never too early to begin learning and becoming educated on your options. Whether you go through IVF or conceive on the first try, there will be many options and decisions for you to make. This can vary from care providers, birth locations, prenatal vitamin selection, learning about the female cycle, etc. Starting early can even help prevent overwhelm and confusion, as you will have time to ask questions and do thorough research. Regardless of where you are in your journey, there will always be more to learn and explore along the way.
Get to Know Your Body
The most important step in preparation is understanding your cycle and when you are the most fertile. A woman’s cycle has four stages: the menstrual phase, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. A simple way to track your cycle is by using basal body temperature. When you are ovulating and at your peak, your basal body temperature will rise. Two great apps to use to track this are Natural Cycles or Premom. Another way to pinpoint when you are ovulating is using luteinizing hormone test strips. They are similar to pregnancy tests but can pinpoint when this hormone is at its peak, which is when your body is preparing to release an egg during ovulation. Between logging your basal body temperature and tracking your luteinizing hormone, you will be able to pinpoint when you are at the ideal time to conceive.
When combining your education, nutrition, understanding the importance of your cycle, and improving your overall well-being, you are on a wonderful track to preparing for pregnancy.
