Is it time for teeth?

Whether you’re a first-time parent or parent of 6, teething can be a challenging time for not just your baby but you as well. Some signs your little one may be teething include, but are not limited to, increased irritability, increased drooling, swollen or red gums, ear pulling, and chewing or gnawing on hands or toys. Your baby may experience all, some, or none of these, as every baby will be different. Some babies may also show signs of teething for a longer duration than other babies; typically, they will show signs of pain or discomfort for a week or so.

Back to the basics

If you suspect your little one is teething, there are a few basics you can start with, such as teething tablets, teething rings, and toothbrushes. Teething toys or rings that can go in the fridge or freezer are always great to have on hand; however, you can also stick a washcloth in, too! You will want to begin brushing the baby’s teeth after they have emerged. A gentle, bristle brush is also great for massaging your little one’s gums to ease their discomfort. If symptoms become worse or are concerning, you can administer over-the-counter pain relievers. However, it is always important to consult your child’s doctor before doing so.

Hacks

Now, if your little one has started or is already eating purées, you can give them these frozen in a silicone feeder. Some ideas include yogurt, applesauce, or any puree your baby enjoys. If you are doing baby-led weaning, you can give them chunks of cold or frozen fruit and vegetables, cut safely for their age range. If your bag has not started these things, you can also freeze breastmilk or formula in a tray and pop them in the silicone feeder for them to enjoy! If you want to keep it simple, freezing yogurt on a cookie tray and giving it to the baby in pieces is also a great idea, just a bit messier!
