Get in the Pool!
The YMCA of the Blue Water Area is known for its huge indoor pools. A variety of swimming lessons are offered for all ages. Children can start getting used to the water as young as six months. Swim lessons are available for all ages and swim levels, right up to adults.
Types of Swim Lessons
Here’s an overview of the types of lessons available at the YMCA of the Blue Water Area:
- Parent-Child swim lessons for ages 6 months to 3 years with an adult in the water.
- Preschool Learn to Swim series for ages 3-5
- School-age Learn to Swim series for ages 5-12
- Porpoise Club is a swim club to bridge the gap between swim lessons and swim teams for swimmers aged 7-18. They focus on refining competitive strokes, learning drills, etc. They meet on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings for an hour. Swimmers for this club must be able to swim 25 yards front stroke and backstroke and have a basic understanding of breaststroke.
- Blue Water Otters is a competitive swim team that practices and competes typically from September- early spring each year.
- Adaptive Swim Development (or ASD) lessons are one-on-one swim lessons for swimmers who have physical or cognitive challenges that make group swimming lessons difficult.
- The “Swim Basics” program was started with a generous gift from a donor to teach elementary students in the Port Huron Area School District to swim free of charge. It is currently serving students 3-5th grade from Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson elementary schools. This is offered two days a week after school, all donor-funded.
- 4th-grade Water Safety is where each 4th-grade classroom in the school district comes one at a time throughout the year for a water safety lesson and demonstration and ends with the students utilizing the facility. This has been a pillar in the water safety plan for the community and continues to be a hit year after year.
- For adults, the YMCA of the Blue Water Area currently offers private swim lessons.
- For adults with swimming ability but who would like to enhance their skills and techniques there is an adult swim class two nights per week for one hour. Swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool. This class is designed for swimmers who want to develop a more effective front crawl through drills and workouts. This class is good for fitness/lap swimmers, triathletes, etc.
