Why Head to the Farmer’s Market?
Farmer’s Markets are more than just a place to shop; they’re a community hub. They provide growers a direct line to their neighbors and give families a chance to buy the freshest produce available. Beyond the food, these markets present a massive learning opportunity for kids. As parents, grandparents, and caregivers, a trip to the Farmer’s Market opens up a whole world of sensory exploration and discovery.
What Can Kids Learn?
When you go to a grocery store, you can buy just about anything. While modern logistics put Peruvian next to Thai pineapples from Thailand year round, a farmers market teaches patience and seasonality. In spring, we can expect asparagus and rhubarb, perhaps even lettuce and tomatoes if growers have a greenhouse. As summer works its magic, more fruits and vegetables enter the scene. In late summer we get the ultimate treat: fresh sweet corn. And by fall, the season concludes with squash, apples, and pumpkins.
Beyond the calendar, kids see exactly where food comes from. Talking to the grower at the Farmer’s Market allows kids to visualize the farm and understand the work involved, like how potatoes have to be dug up and what a corn plant actually looks like in the field.
