Getting Your Baby Outside

Published 6/8/26

Benefits of Taking Your Baby Outside

Many new mothers find taking their baby outside to be a daunting task and often end up avoiding it altogether. However, even the smallest babies receive tremendous benefits, including sensory stimulation, increased vitamin D absorption, and improved sleep. Some even say taking your baby outside is the behavioral equivalent of unplugging your TV and plugging it back in to fix it—a total reset! Simply sitting on your deck with your baby sleeping on your chest for 5 minutes can work wonders. If going outside feels like a chore, start with small increments: try five minutes a day for a few days, then 10 minutes, and gradually build up until you feel more comfortable.

Avoiding Risks

Some parents worry they can’t go outside due to extreme climates, but there are easy ways to adapt. If you live in a warm climate, head out during the coolest parts of the day or even after the sun goes down. Because sunscreen is not recommended for babies under the age of six months old, planning your outings for the early morning or in the evening is ideal—the UV index will be low enough to avoid sunburns.

If you live in a colder climate, try going out at the warmest part of the day, typically midday. You can also babywear to share your own body heat with your baby. Of course, if the weather is truly too extreme, it is perfectly okay to stay warm indoors. Just remember that tiny increments of fresh air are wonderful, and babies are often more resilient than we think. Just keep a close eye on your baby’s cues to ensure they don’t get too warm or too cold.

Benefits for Mom

These outdoor moments are just as vital for moms as the are for babies. Getting outside can drastically improve your mental health, boost your immunity, and regulate your sleep cycle. Going outside can be a great way to reset and shift both your mood as well as your baby’s.

Again, a simple five-minute morning routine on the porch is easy to achieve and highly effective. Bonding with your baby is so important in the early days, and fresh air truly enhances that experience. Setting a modest goal to step outside for just a few minutes can give you a quick sense of accomplishment while giving your mental well-being a much-needed boost. Consider establishing a family walk before bed—it’s a simple, relaxing routine that everyone will enjoy.
