The Heart Behind the Event: Giving Back to Port Huron

For organizers Marissa and Trevon “Tre” White, this event is deeply personal. Tre, a lifelong Port Huron local, is passionate and excited to care for the community that raised him.

As a former single mom, Marissa knows firsthand how challenging the back-to-school season can be on a tight household budget. “There were some years where there just wasn’t enough budget to go school shopping,” Marissa shared. Being able to serve families now brings things full circle: “It heals me a little. I feel so blessed to give back to the community.”

Together, their goal isn’t just to hand out supplies—it’s to make sure every family knows that they aren’t alone.“I hope everyone can accept this event with open arms and know someone is here for you. I want kids to feel confident going back to school and for parents to know that our community is here to support them.”

What to Expect at Knox Field

The afternoon is designed provide completely free resources and activities:

  • Free Haircuts for Boys: Tre White and a team of stylists from Nick’s Barber Shop will be providing fresh cuts for school-aged boys so they can walk into their first day feeling their best. Please Note: haircuts are for boys only and are first come, first serve. So the earlier you get there the better!

How You Can Help

It truly takes a village to pull off an event like this for our community. One of the best ways to support this event is by simply sharing details on social media to spread the word to families in need. Along with letting others know, another great way to help local students prepare for the school year is by donating new or gently used clothing (with a specific need for clothing for high schoolers). To donate, please email Marissa at Marissa.gagnon@yahoo.com.

Bring the family down on August 30th for an afternoon of community connection, stock up on back-to-school wardrobe essentials, and help our kids start the school year with confidence!
