Michigan Parents’ Council Formed to Advise Public School Policy-Making

Did you know there is a Michigan Parents’ Council? The governor-appointed members of the council weigh in on issues from the perspective of parents, particularly when dealing with spending and policy-making for Michigan public schools.

The appointees to the Council are meant to represent communities across the state and include parents of students with special needs and in foster or kinship care. They will be holding “roundtable” discussions at regional locations and will host a public virtual meeting, as well as draft a survey for parents.

Tracey Troy, President of the Michigan PTA, said, “Meaningful parent engagement directly impacts the educational success and well-being of all students in Michigan.”

Public schools now get $9,150 per student in total funding. Addressing the best way to spend that money is part of the goal of the Michigan Parents’ Council, along with tackling issues like student mental health, teacher recruitment, school infrastructure, student supports, such as tutoring, and student safety.
