National SAFE Day

Safety First: A Simple (and Free) Way to Protect Your Kids in the Blue Water Area

Published 6/4/26

The Law and Your Responsibility

Today is National SAFE Day and a great time to talk about responsible gun ownership. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. With approximately 42% of American homes containing at least one firearm, safety must be the top priority. In Michigan, it is a legal requirement to keep firearms securely locked. If a child gains access to an unsecured weapon, the owner can be held legally liable for any injuries.

New Resources for Families

To help keep our community safe, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched a new online resource to help gun owners access free firearm safety devices. These cable-style locks are provided by the Michigan State Police (MSP) and purchased through Project ChildSafe, a nationwide firearm safety initiative.

Where to Pick Up Your Free Lock

MDHHS has launched a digital Gun Lock Distribution Map o help residents find local pickup sites. In our area, you can visit the following offices:

  • St. Clair County MDHHS: 1430 Military Street, Suite 4, Port Huron
  • Sanilac County MDHHS: 515 South Sandusky Road, Sandusky
