Registered Doula, Tayler Morrison, gives some insight into the second trimester of pregnancy.
Second Trimester Milestones
Congrats, mama, you have made it to your second trimester! Hopefully, some of the pesky first-trimester symptoms will begin to subside as you embark on your second trimester. In the second trimester, your energy levels should improve. You will begin to feel the baby kick, your belly will continue to grow, and you will begin to see more and more of your baby’s features on ultrasound! With all these changes, there will be some more tasks for you to do, but don’t worry, you are already working on the biggest task, and that is simply growing your beautiful
baby!
Enjoy this Special Time
Some fun things you may want to start this trimester may be taking pictures of your growing belly, creating a baby registry, and purchasing some maternity clothes. There are some important steps to take this trimester as well, such as hiring a doula and beginning to prepare for birth. You should begin to interview doulas in your area, as many book in advance, and you want to ensure the doula you match the best with has availability for your due date.
Start Preparing
Sometimes doulas also offer childbirth education services or classes. If they do not offer them, they can point you in the direction of classes to take. Whether you plan a home birth, a hospital birth, or a cesarean section, it is important to become educated about all aspects of birth, your body, and your options. On top of childbirth education courses, you can read books or take other specialty classes such as lactation or newborn care. Becoming prepared and educated can be incredibly important.
Get Organized
While it can seem like there are many important things to do, try not to stress as you have time to prepare for your little one’s arrival. Pregnancy brain can be real, and keeping a planner or notebook can be helpful at this time. Another thing to consider is ordering a breast pump, many insurance companies cover breast pumps, so be sure to contact them for more information. Throughout your second trimester, you will continue meeting with your provider and discussing options throughout your pregnancy. Some things you may discuss and do are anatomy ultrasounds, gestational diabetes testing, vaccinations, etc. Remember to discuss the risks and benefits as well as ask questions as you go. Most importantly, remember to give yourself grace and enjoy this journey. Before you know it, you will be holding your little one in your arms!
