The Dance Academy in Port Huron Offers Dance Experiences for All Ages, Abilities

The Dance Academy in Port Huron has been teaching dancers of all ages and abilities for over fifty years. The studio, located on Lapeer Road, between Michigan and Beach, in Port Huron Township, opened in 1971 and has been under the ownership of Donna Miller since 1995.

The studio has taught thousands of children and adults over the past half-century and employs award-winning choreographers and teachers and friendly office staff.

They offer all genres of dance for students aged 6 months to adults. A point of pride is their Cecchetti ballet program, which seeks to develop the essential skills of dance in ballet students. They also use a graded tap program to develop their dancers.

For young dancers, the “Music with Me” class introduces the world of dance to the little ones and their parents with interactive rhythm, singing, dancing, and the development of coordination.

The Dance Academy also offers hip-hop, poms, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, and more for their students.

When asked why dance is a good recreational choice for kids, Dance Academy owner, Donna Miller, said, “Dancing allows one to express themself, and provides physical activity and mental relaxation. Lots of laughter and fun—not to mention beautiful entertainment.”

The Dance Academy is enrolling now for a 6-week summer session. Miller said, “Summer session is a perfect way to introduce yourself to dance. Amongst many classes offered in the summer, one is our popular combo class, a fantastic way to try out our tap, ballet, and jazz program. It’s a great little class to lead into our main fall semester come September, which ends in a beautiful theme recital come springtime.”

The Dance Academy offers a “Miracles Happen in Dance” class, open to all ages, male and female, who have disabilities that require the use of a wheelchair, walker, gait trainer, or have other balance-related challenges. It may be autism, down syndrome, blindness, achondroplasia, lower leg amputations, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or other conditions. Alongside a “dance buddy,’ of their choice, each student is challenged to move beyond physical or developmental limits in an uplifting environment that instills a love of dance.

Miller said that The Dance Academy is very well known for its adult classes. She said that the studio is filled in the evenings with mothers and college students who have a love for dance. They offer fun and rewarding evening classes that let them clear their minds after a long day of looking after others, working, and studying.
