There’s no denying that winter is on its way. If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to get out the hats and gloves and be ready for wet boots by the door.
We asked Erin MacNeill, interior designer and owner of Willow and Grove Interior Design, for her thoughts on transitioning to winter decor and staying organized for all those winter adventures.
MacNeill said that she does a seasonal reset in her house where she changes out the rugs, gets out the boot trays, and switches up her decor.
She said, “It’s a nice time to change out some pillows or blankets for something a little more substantial- a heavier blanket to curl up under, or a nice cozy textured pillow on the couch. It’s ok to think heavier. Add some layers to your home- just like you do when you’re getting ready to bundle up and go sledding!”
MacNeill said this is a good time to layer textures, change out the artwork if you like, refresh a bookcase, change out the rugs, or do anything you can do to make your house cozy for the coming winter days.
According to MacNeill, digging out the mittens and hats and finding a place for them all can be overwhelming. She said to use baskets to keep everyone’s items together. It is an easy way to create some order in the closet or hallway.
Getting your house ready for winter often includes some seasonal decorations. We asked about trends in holiday decorating for 2023.
MacNeill said, “Some trends I’m seeing this season are pretty classical red, white, and green items mixed with some sparkle and character. Scandinavian design always seems to dominate the trends with its minimalist approach and good-quality pieces. Clean lines combined with some Christmas whimsy are excellent ways to invoke the holiday spirit in your home!”
