DNR Outdoor Adventure Center is Sensory Friendly

The Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit has announced that it is Sensory Friendly. That means that kids who don’t love constant noise and stimulation can relax and enjoy all that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources-run facility has to offer.

Along with being Sensory Friendly, the Center provides for the needs of nursing mothers, provides maps in six languages, and has accommodations for all levels of mobility. They also provide a quiet room with a rocking chair for guests who need a break from the activities in the Center.

The Outdoor Adventure Center has partnered with KultureCity, a non-profit that advocates for those with invisible disabilities, to provide an inclusive environment for those who are living with PTSD, autism, dementia, strokes, and other conditions.

Guests can use things like weighted lap pads, fidget tools, and noise-canceling headphones. All staff are certified by KultureCity to accommodate sensory needs.

The Outdoor Adventure Center offers Sensory Friendly Days. The next one is 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, February 5th, 2023. See a full schedule.

The DNR’s Outdoor Adventure Center gives an outdoors experience with archery, snowmobiling, mountain biking, fishing, and much more, all in the historic Globe Building on the Detroit Riverfront.
