Eclectic Mix of “Things” Available for Free Borrowing

What will they think of next? The St. Clair County Library System already has the obvious—books! They also have long provided a collection of music, games, and even fishing poles. But did you know that you can also check out an accordion? A pair of color-blind glasses? A 6-person tent? A metal detector? Yes, it’s true!

The St. Clair County Library System officially launched its new “Library of Things” collection, designed to support the educational, recreational, and informational needs of the community. The library contains a variety of craft items, household tools, gadgets to help get household and hobby projects completed, musical instruments, backyard games, and seasonal outdoor items.

Borrowing Guidelines and Key Details

• Eligibility: Free to any St. Clair County resident aged 18 or older with a valid library card.
• Checkout Limit: Cardholders can check out up to five items at a time for a two-week loan period (no renewals permitted).
• Location & Pickup: Items are housed at the Main Library in Port Huron but can be transferred to any local branch upon request.
• Returns: All items must be returned directly to library staff—they cannot be dropped in outdoor book returns.
• Fees & Responsibilities: There are no checkout fees or security deposits. Borrowers are responsible for lost or damaged items beyond normal wear and tear, based on a standard replacement cost schedule which is available upon request.
